i've been making music lately on my phone & while i'm happy with the songs i'm making i;ve got this internal debate in regards to using the preset instruments on the software im using because it's not actually be playing those instruments but it is me composing them into a song i've wirrten & turning them into something unique yet there's a voice in me telling me i should learn the guitar or whatever and perform those parts myself. idk man

I would say learn an instrument just so you have that physical knowledge, but don’t be ashamed of using synthetic instruments either.

Like when Kanye dropped 808s (one of my favorite albums ever) people dogged him for using auto tune and i thought his response to that was pretty inspiring.

it was something along the lines of “i’m not a singer, but i hear melodies in my head, i still wrote the melody so who cares if i use a computer to help me sing it?”

it’s not about the materials, music is spectacle.  if it looks good, and sounds good who cares how it was made?

the best thing about art is that the only rules are the ones you put upon yourself.  sometimes rules can be satisfying, and help you get real with yourself, and sometimes limits can end up freeing you from your own bad tendencies.

but also you are the master, you are in control, don’t let societies ideas of what is and what isn’t a legitimate instrument box you in.

do you.
